The Masks We Wear (EVENT!)

The sweet sound of ballroom music drifted out of the school's auditorium, courtesy to the school's music department. The double doors leading to the courtyard had been opened to allow in the night time air. Calista stood just outside one of them, watching in silence as students wandered in. Students traded in uniforms for suits and dresses, masks adorned their faces as they walked in on their dates arms. Tonight was Halloween and the night of the masquerade ball. It was a night everyone could pretend to be something they weren't. For Calista, that was an everyday occurrence.

She found it funny how everyone seemed to brush off what had happened not too long ago. It hadn't even been a full two weeks since what had occurred at this school. Calista's glossed lips fell into a faint grimace at the memory. Kazuma The name was disgusting to her , but, most of all, she was disgusted with herself. The memories of those days had flooded her mind. She had actually only recently been released from the school infimary, not only for her physical injuries , but the entire ordeal had left her with quite a few mental injuries as well. She had been frantic when she had finally gained consciousness. Tears constantly steamed from her eyes as she thought about what she had done. Not every student had made it out alive and she was also responsible for it. Innocent civilians had lost their lives at her hands. Now, violence had never been a problem for her , but then, she had a cause. She hurt and kidnapped others for no apparent reason, except to feed her own insanity. She had also gotten her dear Seth involved. She dragged him into the mess and after he had been made Prefect Leader, thus making him a number one enemy for the Battle Front. She hadn't even seen her brother for days, refusing to even look, let alone speak to him since it happened. Every time he entered her mind, the fading memory of her own twisted desires and her guilt crept into her and continually haunted her every waking moment. She had been offered leaves of absences, from the prefects, the battle front, and the school also offered her counseling. She had refused all of them. She needed a sense of normality again.

Calista had come here tonight for that reason. She had come to pretend. To pretend everything was fine, that she was fine, that she didn't feel like some hollow shell. To do the thing she loved most, to dance. She had been so sure of going, that she needed this and now here she stood, dateless, in a beautiful black dress, wondering if she should go in or return to the dorms for a night alone with chocolate ice cream, junk food, and movies. With a small nod, she summoned all the willpower in her body and walked through the doorway, the dress revealing her silky smooth legs with each step. She had already spent an hour with a curling iron to get that perfect wave into her hair, she might as well not let it go to waste.

She had to admit, the school had done well. They had practically transformed the school's immense auditorium into a ballroom. Tables with white cloths and matching chairs were scattered around the perimeter. Each table was decorated with beautiful floral arrangements, surrounded by flickering candles. Chandeliers hung from the ceilings and students stood about the room. They were dancing, talking by the refreshment table, and just enjoying life.

A small sigh escaped her lips as she adjusted her silver mask. What had she gotten herself into?

She'd told her dad everyone had to wear heels so definitively that she couldn't understand why he still argued. He'd chuckled and insisted that Lilith was mistaken, that she'd look beautiful without them. He'd told her she could get the longer dresses that reached the floor, instead of the one she wore that just barely covered the tops of her knees. Finally, he gave a sigh. That was when she knew she'd won.

Her father gave a nod, then lead her through the store, her hand grasped loosely in his just as if she were still a kid. Tapping at a case of watches, he told her since he didn't have a fairy godmother on call, he'd settle for the pink watch to let her know when he expected her to call him. She'd gave him a grin and a nod, resolving to wear whichever watch he decided on. Fortunately he picked the all pink one.

Now as Lilith wobbled into the auditorium just behind Calista, she knew the prize she thought she'd won was imaginary. She could hardly walk, much less dance! Even just the short distance down the hallway before the auditorium gave her ample opportunity to misstep and understand how delicate her ankle could be. Lilith stood with a smile anyway, the pink mask with the crown-like adornment atop it in place, with the elastic tucked just above her ear and below the dark locks of hair. Potential for pain or just discomfort aside, this was going to be fun! Her eyes swept the auditorium when she reached the threshold beside Cali, looking for any sign of Chris. When she wasn't immediately noticeable Lilith turned to Cali.

"Hey, Cali!

[/color]" Lilith chimed in cheerfully as she tucked her left hand behind her back to hide the watch. Her right arm remained at her side. Mask or not, Cali was a hard person to miss.

Calista knew that being spoken to was inevitable, especially at a party like this. Yet, somehow, she feared it happening. She didn't want to talk. She had barely spoken at all since she had awoken after being out for 4 days. She even wondered if she still knew how to. Maybe she was just afraid of people asking how she was, that her lying wasn't as good as it once was. Even the school's medical staff had stopped trying and settled for her grunts and curt nods as the best response they were going to get.

Cali's dark blue eyes were extremely noticeable against the silvery backdrop of her mask, an unreadable expression coating her features as she turned to the brunette beside her. Lilith Malixi. She had never spoken to the girl very often, mostly because of her relationship with Seth. Originally, she held resentment towards the younger girl, as she did with many of those who had gotten her brother's attention, eventually this gave way to a rather neutral emotion. But, at that moment in time, the raven-haired girl was rather thankful. Maybe because Lilith wasn't Darrian, or Lelouch, or Seth.

"Hello." She replied with a slight nod, her eyes falling over the girl's clothes. She was extremely cute, Cali would admit and her apparent cheerfulness was one of those things that pushed away one's own depression.

"The school did a nice job. Don't you think?" The least Calista could do was try to at least act pleasant. After all, the girl did nothing wrong and Calista swore to herself that she'd enjoy tonight.

"Yeah- the candles add such an awesome glow to the room. And everyone looks... well, happy~ It's nice.

[/color]" Lilith confirmed with a grin. "It looks just beautiful in here. Next year, I want to help with the decorating so I can cheer everyone up.[/color]" Lilith's eyes danced with excitement, her gaze shifting from Cali to the decorations in the room as if to confirm with her own eyes that decorating the room would be an entertaining activity she could be proud of later. Now wanting to do it and doing something impulsive like joining the prefects just for the opportunity to were two different matters entirely... but she'd certainly consider it all the same if posed with that decision.

"Your dress looks stunning- I'm sure you'll look just beautiful when you get out there to dance." Lilith observed sweetly. Her information pertaining to Cali was limited. She knew through rumors that she had a whip and that you didn't mess with her, but also that Cali was an amazing dancer. In terms of beauty alone, Cali surely stole the hearts of her audience long before the movement. Lilith hardly dared imagine just how daunting a dance competition with the dark haired girl would be. Fortunately for Lilith, she wasn't much of a dancer to start with.

"Are you excited? I mean, the prefects get a night to enjoy themselves with the rest of us... I think it's going to be awesome![/color]" Lilith found herself slightly hesitant in leaving the question of if Cali was excited to be answered. After it escaped her lips, she couldn't seem to resist the flow of distracting comments that she could only hope would lessen the impact of her initial question. She wasn't even sure why she'd asked.. Cali didn't seem like the kind of person who went about getting worked up over things, much less a dance. And if she did, she sure didn't seem to show it often.[/blockquote][/blockquote][/size]

Had it really only been a few days since those horrible kidnapping? It truly only felt like days if anything to Bridget yet perhaps that because she had suffered through it. Now standing along the edges of the masquerade ball the school was putting on she felt oddly out of place. It was a new experience for the girl as she was usually quite confident but the fight with Cali and the whole incident in general had knocked down her pride a few bars as well as her confidence. In fact she wasn't quite sure what she was supposed to do without a date to dance with.

Taking a breath she pulled at the edge of her dark blue dress making sure everything was sitting right. Not being a girl for dresses it was a bit odd at first but she had become accustomed to the shape and movement of the dress. As well as walking in the heels with a gash along her ankle from a certain shadow whip -wait she was done thinking about that, tonight she had decided not to long ago she was going to forget that. And so she would as she pushed off the wall and went out into the crowd.

Noticing a break where two girls stood the one familiar form the other not so much but no better time to change that right? Walking up the click of her heels washed out by the music floating all around them and the laughing on both sides of her Bridget made her way over to the pair stopping next to Lilith."It's really is nice to see everyone letting lose and having fun all together for once. The masks just add to it." She interjected only hearing the last bit of their conversation. "Hey, had to say I love you're dresses." She smiled sweetly producing a false confidence. "How come you two aren't out dancing?" Bridget slid in after a moment.

This was a terrible idea. Was the one thought in Finley's head as she approached the Auditorium. So many people were going into the place that it almost made her turn around. Her black mask rested on her face and her zebra dress reaching her knees. This was a terrible idea. There's the negativity again. She was so tempted to turn around and run back to her dorm before people saw her, but no, her feet betrayed her and kept moving in the direction that was filling with people. She could tell her breathing was increasing, that she would be spoken to, that her day would be ruined because of this night, but still she walked towards it.

Finley walked confidently through the doors. Fake confidence of course. Internally she was freaking out and was about to scream, but no. Fin couldn't scream, she was silent, forever. She pursed her lips and looked around. She didn't even know who anybody was for crying out loud! Why did she even come here? She thought it would be fun maybe? She thought there would be less people? She didn't know what was going through her head. Fin looked around and saw an empty area and went towards it. No people was better for her.

Fin frowned and looked around. She wished Wyatt was here, or at least somebody she knew. She felt like a nobody. She saw three girls together and bit her lip. Did she dare go over to somebody? They would probably think she was weird since she couldn't talk. Oh well. She had a mask on, nobody would need to know who she was, that way if they thought she was weird it wouldn't matter. Fin nodded. She had a little bag, but all that was in it was a notepad and pencil so that she could talk to people. Fin walked up to the girls and quickly wrote down the word "hi". Now all she had to do was wait for their reaction.

Clair walked into the the Auditorium, wearing and red and white dress that went just below her knees. There was a red and white bows in her hair and her mask was white with a bit of gold. Her mask was fancy, yes fancy as most of her stuff was, this was what she was like. She leaned agianst the wall, watching at first to take a look, to see what was going on. Her dress stopped when she did to lean agianst the wall, she could see a group of girls, but wasn't sure if she should go over, so far she had no friends, but this night she wanted to possibly make a few at least. She relaxed, but still decided to wait, she wanted to be soothed and relaxed before doing so. She felt the white bands on her arms, they were soft and felt warm.

She looked up at the ceiling with her sparkling brown eyes, but stopped, not wanting to seem wierd. She wondered if anyone would come near her, would want to talk to her, but she didn't care. She was here now and she wanted to make friends, then she guessed that tommorrow she would be different. Ever so different, she would make them wondered. She felt her straightened hair, she was done it herself, it was hard and she almost burned herself several times, but it looked nice to her. There were a few curls, she hoped that they weren't noticable to anyone who was here. She still leaned against the wall, now looking at the floor, slightly lonely.

Meredith Monroe's heart was pounding for more than one reason.

The first cause of her racing heart was simply the anxiety that such a significant social event typically brought to a not-very-social teenager. There seemed to be pressure to ensure that tonight was perfect--a night of fun, romance, and dancing that would put Cinderella to shame. The traumatic week that everyone had experienced not so long ago didn't help the pressure, either. Of the few notable qualities the 18-year-old commanded, none of them happened to be social prowess, so the night would surely prove especially challenging for her. She quietly fussed and fretted over the one thing she could control, her outfit. No matter how many times Seth or Isabelle said she looked lovely (or "like a potential hot mess" as the latter put it), she wouldn't be convinced that she looked anything but silly in the flowing purple gown that touched the floor, silk white gloves, silver heels, and cream-colored mask that she had donned. She didn't have the lithe frame and dark, mysterious attraction of Calista, nor did she possess the voluptuous body and classical beauty of Christopher. Really, it was a miracle that she would be attending the ball with a date, Seth Rosa.

Seth was the second source of the girl's anxiety. Neither of them were the type to announce their business to the world, so coming to the dance together --though neither of them said it aloud-- would likely serve as the couple's public outing. Meredith wondered how the school would react, considering the couple's history involving a certain mind-controlling madman. Would there be whispers? Would they not care at all? The second option would be just fine with Meredith. It was what she was used to in the past. The spotlight that came with being kidnapped was very new to the young adult.

There were two people in particular whose reaction Meredith dreaded. Calista, Seth's sister whose blessing Meredith had yet to receive. And Lilith, whom everyone had assumed would end up with Seth for what seemed like forever.

And what were the odds, the girls were in the same group, Meredith noted as she cautiously entered the auditorium. Even though the sight of all the crowds only added to her nervousness, she decided that this would be her only opportunity to somewhat safely test the waters before Seth arrived. And on the bright side, Bridget was with the girls, too. Having one familiar and friendly face would help the situation. Quietly worming her way into the group beside Bridget, Meredith smiled at the girls to greet them. By some stroke of luck, she didn't have to come up with something to say next; another newcomer arrived at about the same moment and scrawled a greeting on a notepad. Hi.

The newcomer looked nervous; Meredith knew how she felt. Meredith gave the girl one of her characteristically warm smiles and did something she hoped would make the girl feel a little more reassured. Using her knowledge from three years of taking American Sign as a foreign language, Meredith signed a few words to the girl.

"Hello. You look beautiful," she signed, speaking the words aloud as well.

Seth let out a small sigh as he looked into the mirror for the sixth time, as he stood in his room. It wasn't that he wasn't already ready, wearing a basic tuxedo was somewhat familiar to him, and the midnight blue of the coloring did well to blend into the darkness, while providing him with a little hint of color. Basically it fit his dark appearance, and managed to go quite well with his basic demeanor, although it still felt weird to be wearing such expensive clothing, the high quality of the material made it excessively comfortable, and he was considering wearing something similar all the time now. Of course, it still didn't help that his bow was a bit lopsided, having troubles tying it just right, and having messed with it for the better part of a half hour, had finally considered it a lost cause.

Picking up the small violet tulip that was on the shelf and picking up the venetian mask shaped by his own hands out of a mishmash of several alloys, Seth moved in front of the mirror again. He frowned slightly at his hair, running his fingers through it to push it towards the back, before placing the mask onto his face, and gave off a half smile to see the effect. Letting out a soft sigh, he figured it would be prudent to leave now, less his date be standing on her own.

Now wasn't that a novel though. Seth Lorenz Rosa with a date. Sure, thanks to his sister, he was aware that girls actually wanted to date him, but he had never noticed before any girl's vying for his attention, so this sudden change in status from single to couple was quite new and thrilling for him. If nothing else it added a sense of nervousness that he could hardly comprehend, a feeling of butterflies in his stomach that was entirely familiar. In face, Seth placed his hand against his chest, holding the tulip close to his body, as he felt his heart hammer against his chest, it was almost frightening to consider that they'd be among so many people on what could be considered their first date.

He couldn't help but let out another sigh before taking a deep breath in order to draw in the courage from his surroundings, before quickly leaving his room and heading towards the location of the ball.

It was with surprising luck that he managed to find his date standing near the entrance, rather than already lost on the dance floor, and he paused slightly from afar to admire her beauty, before walking towards her. As he did so, he noticed the others around her, Calista, Lilith, and some other random girls, and wondered if he should intrude on what could be girl time. Of course, it hardly was of concern when he saw his girl sign to another about how gorgeous she looked.

Nodding to himself, he walked up to Meredith and wrapped one arm around her waist, using the other to place the violet flower just behind her ear, and giving her a small kiss on the cheek. If this was the they they would come out, that they would reveal to everyone their relationship, then there was little point trying to be coy about it all. All the same, Seth was quite thankful for the masks, as he helped to his his own reddening cheeks at his braze action. Nodding to the rest in greeting, Seth then leaned in closer to the girl in his arms and whispered into her ear, "You look magnificent tonight."

"Thank you, your dress is adorable as well" Calista said honestly. The dark haired girl could never pull off that much pink. However, on someone as happy as Lilith, it really worked for her. Glancing over her shoulder, Calista glanced at the dance floor. Couples already began to glide around in a beautiful waltz and the natural dancer inside her began to long to do the same. She hadn't danced for weeks now and she wondered if she still kept her skill as one of the school's top performers.

Calista snapped out of a her revere, Lilith's question pulling her back to Earth and catching her slightly off guard. Excited? Was she excited? Maybe Calista was a little nervous. Deciding upon her answer, she nodded slightly.

"Yes, I am. It'll be nice to just forget about everything and enjoy the night." She replied, the faintest of smiles appearing on her face. Another person approached the two, and Calista had the urge to wince at the familiarity of this person. Bridget Shine. She was one of the many who had suffered because of her. Who had felt pain at the hands of that other Calista. That psychopathic who continued to wreak havoc on the real Calista's mind and emotions.

"You look lovely, Bridget." Calista said with a nod. The short blue dress and boots truly suit her. It seemed like everyone was dressed to impress tonight. "Oh, I just felt like chatting a bit...I'll be dancing later on in the evening" She smiled.

It seemed like their little group was multiplying. Before long, another face she recognized joined them. Now this girl, she didn't know quite as well. She was a dark haired girl, like herself. A prefect, she believed. Calista gave the customary greeting, a nod of aknowledgement followed by a simple "hello." It wasn't the warmest of greetings but, Calista was never really a 'warm' person.

"Meredith." Calista said, slightly colder, as the brunette girl approached them. The sixteen year old took a few steps back, crossing her arms over her chest in slight dismay. If Meredith was here, then she knew someone else was on his way. Her date who doubled as Calista's elder brother. Calista's suspisions weren't off in the slightest as the other Rosa joined the group. Calista took another step back, keeping a fair amount of distance between the couple and pulling her eyes anywhere but, the two. He looked handsome, as always in his tux and mask. She gave him a slight nod without a single word of hello.

To Lilith's delight, Cali Rosa smiled. Even though Lilith's comments were reason for her to worry, that smile made it vanish in an instant. It was all Lilith could do to mute her excitement down to a bright smile instead of giggling with glee. Cali Rosa didn't hate her! ... well, not in this precise moment. Aiding in the effort of not laughing was the arrival of another girl. No less the forest girl! Lilith nodded, her grin still visible as her tone took on a shy appreciation while she offered thanks to Bridget's compliment.

"Yours is such a pretty blue! And your gloves... I wish I would have bought some- they look amazing.

[/color]" Lilith's tone was equally sweet, the shyness fading from her voice naturally as she spoke.

In reply to why she wasn't dancing, Lilith was completely willing to answer. She glanced to the dance floor first, though, enabling Cali to respond, and then, before Lilith worked up the words to assure Bridget she'd dance, there was a girl with a paper. Lilith raised her right hand, offering a small wave to the writing girl as Meredith- a stranger to Lilith entirely- appeared and signed. Lilith wouldn't be able to tell you what she signed, but the movement of the hands couldn't be much else, unless she was using it as a means of channeling her power and attacking... Somehow, the orange haired youth didn't strike her as the attacking type.

Seth's appearance made Lilith's breath catch. At least when he moved straight to Mer without a word to her or Cali. Within seconds the surprise was replaced by concern for the younger Rosa. Lilith instinctively looked to Cali. It wasn't surprising to see her arms crossed in what Lilith could only assume was disaproval. Sympathetic and feeling her own sense of mixed emotions at Seth's open affection, Lilith placed a hand against the dark haired girl's shoulder. Her other hand raised to point to an imaginary spot on the dance floor- really more in the general direction than at any specific spot.

"Cali, look, a spot opened up on the floor! Will you please help me dance? Just a quick practice! Pretty please? I don't want to step on any cute guy's shoes,[/color]" Lilith pleaded. She couldn't work up the forced excitement she hoped for. She also couldn't bring herself to look away from where she was pointing to meet the eyes of either Rosa, much less the innocent bystanders of the incident that was unfolding.[/blockquote][/blockquote][/size]

Sinclair Gabriel was one for appearances. Dressed in a dark green silk dress shirt and a solid black tuxedo, he specifically maintained a disinterested coolness within his own expression to ensure he came off in just the right way. With his hands casually placed in the pockets of his dress pants he strode into the dance, pausing only once to assess the situation. As his green eyes traveled from person to person he specifically didn't see Isabelle, the girl he wished he could have asked. Under different circumstances, primarily if she remembered who he was beyond that creepy kid, he would have been downright giddy to escort her to their first dance together.

Instead he saw Bridget. While Bridget was a very kind person and someone he was now beelining for in spite of the group she was clearly in, the social butterfly within himself was silently disappointed within himself that he didn't know more of the inhabitants of the room. It just wasn't him. But no matter, there would be time to introduce himself properly if the night went well. A smirk replaced the disinterest when he reached the spot just behind Bridget. Unceremoniously- actually downright silently- he placed both hands on her shoulders with a quiet 'boo'. Bracing himself for a reaction, he loosened his initial grip so it was no more than a light touch against her shoulder, just in case she spun around.

There was a warm smile to their compliments, though she wasn't sure how she compared to the two. Cali as always looking impressive and Lilith simply looked like she was ready for a ball of fun. "Thank you both!" Though the gloves were interesting she was glad you couldn't see the thin brace that she hid with them, a little sprained wrist from the... problems of the last few weeks. Yet she didn't want to think of that since Cali was the one who inflicted it, right now, tonight she just didn't want to hold any grudges.

It wasn't long till someone else joined their little group, a girl with a lovely red and white dress who spoke with a piece of paper. Bridget nodded and waved in greeting offering a small smile. She hadn't seen this girl before and wasnt' quite sure how to react to the paper yet she spoke up and complimented her mask. Quickly after that a face she did recognize approached, "Mer," She said with a wave but didn't say anything else as Cali seemed to be disturbed by her joining. That when she remembered that Meredith was being accompanied by the other Rosa. Yet hadn't she heard something about him and Lilith- she wasn't up to date with the school gossip. Well this was sure to be interesting.

The awkwardness that was starting to bloom inside Bridget-something she normally would have passed over and continued on- increased as Seth appeared. She looked away eyes drifting back to the dark haired beauty who has manged an nod for her brother. She would have to remember to say 'nice one' to Lilith for attempting to break this up yet she wasn't so sure it was going to work. And needless to say it did nothing to save her. About to excuse herself from the little meeting someone's hands were suddenly on her shoulders. Jumping slightly she turned to the side a bit to get a look at whoever was standing.

Shaking her head she couldn't help the grin on her face. "Hey Sinclair, you look hansom tonight. I hope you don't step one any ones toes while your dancing." Giving a small hint to their dancing lesson that had been somewhat successful. Though she doubted they would break out into the Beguine, however interesting that may be. "No date?" She couldn't help the question since he seemed to be the type to ask a girl, actually he seemed the type to be talking to everyone. Speaking of dates she was actually surprised that Cali or Lilith didn't have a date either.

Back in boys dome, beat and lyrics of Everywhere I go blasted out of room 402. The bass and volume tuned up to the point that the window was shaking, threatening to break. Luckily most were at the dance, so he could always blame it on some freak accident. Chandler stood there fixing his checkered tie, staring at his reflection in silence.

What was suppose to be thoughts of fun times and excitement, were replaced with self doubt and nightmarish memories. They plagued his mind. But he could hide all that tonight.

With his mask. It was almost fitting, hide your worries and weakness behind a mask of strength.

His memories flashed to his own kidnapping, how he was caught off guard and taken down to that hell hole. He was wounded but he was able to escape with the help of a girl named Bridget Shine. Who was probably one of the few real friends he had.

With a shake of his head he pushed them aside, no point in dwelling on the past. After all he healed up nicely, the only mark was the newly form scar over his left eyebrow on his once flawless face. And it's not like they knew it was him who caused that cave in right? Of course not, Bridge would never rat him out and as for the other...well hopefully she was buried six feet under.

"Alright, time to go."

Turning on the balls of his foot he spins around, his jacket flashing open before neatly falling back into place as he made his way out of his room. On the way he grab his Ipod and his Mask, plugging his ear phone after her place his masked on.

Once outside he saw his dates. Four beautiful girls, each one dressed rather slutty. Giving them a polite yet charming smile he extends his arms so he had two under each shoulder. Each with a blush on their face, one or two giggled. Why? Well of course it was because they had the pleasure of being his dates, but each one had a single thought in mind. Who was he going to take home tonight?

Once Chandler Fernandez and his girls entered he couldn't help but admire how nice the hall was. It almost made it seem normal.

His sapphire eyes scanned the room, there was Calista, a girl he rarely saw. Lilith, Finley, each one striking beauty. Clair, He wanted to go ask her for a dance but that wouldn't be smart with the girls leaning on him. Meredith, well let just say Chandler rather not try to flirt with her. That left two people.

His friend Bridget. He almost ran other to her with a stupid grin on his face but before he took that first step he noticed the boy. "Oh..." Frowning in disappointment he moved his eyes to the last person.

Seth, Leader of the perfects. It took every ounce of control Chandler had not to make a ceiling fall ontop of him. In fact he was close his hand was already lifted, but he was able to regain control before any harm was done. No, he wouldn't ruin this for everyone else, plus who know who could get hurt.

Shaking his head he moved to the radio and "Fixed" it. By that he meant he overrode it and attached it to his Ipod. Jumping up ontop of the most upfront table he presses the pause button on his music player cutting the music off.

"Let's get this party started!"

Pressing play he switched the music to his own dance music, mind you all cleaned version and school appropriate of course.

Meredith's eyes softened in sadness but understanding as Calista took steps away from her. She was prepared for this, she had guessed that Seth's sister was not going to receive her with open arms, and she told herself that she would have to work for approval. But knowing all that was different from watching it unfold. Not knowing what else to do, Meredith offered her warmest smile, hoping that it would somehow convey to Calista that she understood and that she would never try to be more important to Seth than Calista.

Meredith was not the greatest lover of surprises. Her affliction with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, associated with being chased around in a crumbling classroom by a dagger-wielding demigod whom she happened to love, was to blame for that fact. Surprises associated with the voice of her recent attacker were especially distressing. It was good, then, that the cream-colored mask on her face hid the initial terrorized look in her eyes from view when Seth put his arms around her and said something to her. Still, a slight gasp escaped from her lips as she jumped a bit in Seth's arms.

On the bright side, Meredith's conscious mind was quicker in overriding her subconscious instinct this time than previous instances, and her fear was short-lived; it was gone completely by the time Seth's lips gently met her cheek, leaving behind only a sped-up heartbeat in its place. She smiled sweetly and put her arms over her boyfriend's. "Sorry. You just startled me," she laughed softly, absentmindedly putting one of his hands in her own and giving it a light squeeze before returning her attention to the group. Meredith was shy to begin with, so public display of affection was probably never going to be an issue, but this situation in particular seemed to be especially inconducive to PDA.

As Lilith made her proposal, Meredith scanned the faces of the group to assess the situation. Lilith didn't seem angry; that was a relief. Meredith had only heard good things about the sweet Lilith, and she really didn't want to make an enemy in such a nice person. Of course, the vague aura of mixed emotions coming from Lilith revealed that she wasn't exactly thrilled to see the couple, but there were too many emotions flying around the room for the empath to know more than that. She silently noted to herself that she should try to befriend Lilith some day. It couldn't hurt, and it would certainly be better than the uncomfortable tension of not knowing whether or not the girl hated her, whether or not Meredith should explain or apologize. At least Bridget still seemed friendly. Though she wouldn't say it out loud, if the night were going to turn into one of drama, Meredith hoped deeply that she would at least have one person, Bridget, on her side.

As silly as it was, she forgot to count Seth as not being against her. It was a strange thing, dating her recent attacker who was well-known to have a huge crush on a different girl, thanks to a chatty blonde-haired prefect.

Evaluation aside, with the topic of dancing brought up, Meredith smiled as it gave her the opportunity to compliment Calista.

"You should go, Calista! I've heard your dancing is the most beautiful thing to watch," Meredith praised. The word "watch" was almost emphasized, since Meredith didn't dare to invite herself to go dance with the girls. If this was their getaway plan to escape from Meredith, she would respect that and let them escape her.
