Basics
Name: Shizuko Hongo
Nicknames: Shizu
Age: 18
Birthday: June 21, 1997
Grade: 12
Power:
Enhanced Intelligence
Shizuko is more than just a genius. She has an IQ that is close to off the chart, and it seems to only grow with time. She picks up books on the things she wants to learn and reads them at a rapid rate. After doing a math problem once or twice, she is able to solve the same kind of problem with ease. Sketching blueprints and building machines from said blueprints almost comes naturally to her. She really does not have to think very much after doing a task once or twice; she just remembers how to do it.
There are limits to her intelligence, however. She cannot just understand something by skimming it. She needs to intently read what she wants to learn and pay attention. She can usually understand something in one reading session, but some things, like interpersonal concepts and spatial concepts, may take longer time to properly understand. She cannot know everything about everything because she only has so much space in her brain for memory.
Mechanical Intuition
Shizuko seems to be drawn to scrap metals and collects them to use for various projects. By simply looking at the metal, she can come up with a rough idea for a machine or device she make out of the “junk”. She does think for a few moments on what device she wants to make out of the scrap metal, but she does not do so for long, since she often sets off to draw a blueprint after she has an idea. Her “ideas” can range from simple to complex, depending on how much she has in front of her and what she knows can work without something blowing up. Another part of this power is the ability to figure out how to use machines that were not crafted by her.
Shizuko can design something that requires more scraps or pieces than she has. She is limited to using whatever materials she has; in other words, she cannot create metal out of nowhere. She cannot really know how the devices will function until she tries them out, which can result in injury to herself or bystanders, if there are any. The only way she can learn how machines and devices created by other inventors work is if she touches them for a minimum of two minutes. She needs to keep her palm and fingertips on the device in order to absorb the knowledge. She also prefers to read the first few pages of the manual if it comes with one, but this is not a necessity.
Technokinesis
Shizuko's inventions often become machines that could be considered "technology". Because of this, she is also gifted with technokinesis, or, the ability to control anything that would be considered "technology". More often than not, things of this nature usually utilize electricity and have tiny, intricate parts that can be hard to control, depending on how complex the machine is. The machines she can control are limited to those that are powered by electrical outlets and batteries. She can manipulate the data contained in objects such as computers and calculators and retrieve any deleted data, though she cannot make the data exist in the real world. She is talented at fixing technological machines is well, thanks to her great knowledge of computer parts as well as her unusual ability to be able to fix glitches or corruptions within a matter of minutes. She is also very good a programming.
One of the major limits on this ability is that she can only utilize battery-powered technology for combat or data retrieval. This means that strictly battery-operated machines that are not plugged into an outlet cannot be manipulated by her unless she is retrieving data. She cannot manipulate any machines that she does not have any idea how to use. Another limit of her ability is that there are some machines that will not bend to her will. Yes, machines are not sentient beings, but, the electrons that control how the machine operates are highly volatile and will not always cooperate with her ability. There is a chance of her "shorting out" a machine as well, if she overuses it and because of this, she often works on more than one project at a time so she is not left powerless. She does not have to necessarily be touching the machine she wants to manipulate, but it has to be at least five feet away. Any technology used for combat that is plugged into an electrical outlet also has a chance of becoming unplugged, essentially rendering it useless, since there is no electricity flowing through it. Her power over machines, specifically computers, can be greatly hindered by a virus, Trojan horse, or any kind of technological power negation.

Appearance:
Shizuko stands at about five feet, five inches tall. She is also on the slim side, weighing in at about 103 pounds. She has barely any muscle on her body, so her leanness clearly comes from her metabolism and small appetite. She is a very curvy girl, with a narrow torso and a wide bust as well as wide hips. She has bleach-blonde hair, which is her natural hair color, despite people's insistence that she dyes it. She keeps some of said hair in a ponytail while the rest of it hangs down. Sometimes, the ponytail will have a small ribbon pinned in it, if she is not working in her lab. Her eyes are a deep, rich brown color that resembles the milk chocolate of a candy bar. Her skin is quite fair, thanks to the time she has spent indoors, sketching and building. She will easily burn if she stays outside for too long.
Shizuko knows that she is a very beautiful young woman, however, she still prefers to wear modest clothing. Of course, she wears the typical Ashford uniform, with its white blazer, red button-up shirt buttoned all the way to the top button and the black skirt that falls an inch or two below her knee. Of course, she knows she does not have to button up the shirt to the top button or wear her skirt so long, but she prefers to keep herself covered so that she does not draw too much attention to herself. When she is not in uniform, she prefers to wear clothing that is suited to the season and her own, comfortable style. Most often, one will find this young lady wearing a pair of jeans and a t-shirt with some kind of logo on it. When she is working in the lab, she will also don a white lab coat that she brought with her that was hidden in her backpack. She always carries around a pair of goggles to the lab, just in case something ends up blowing up.
Personality
Overall Personality:
Shizuko is a very quiet young lady, who does not say much of anything unless she is spoken to first. She is also very shy, so she is not often well-known. In fact, some of her teachers in the past have forgotten she was in their class until they received the class's test scores. This did not seem to bother her very much, seeing as she always scored the highest, which was to be expected. She was offered many times to skip grades, but she refused to, saying that it was "not fair" to other students. She is very aware of her intelligence and she loves adding to it; however, she does not see herself superior just because of her intellect. She sees herself as a normal girl who likes to draw blueprints for machines made out of scrap metal and just happens to be the highest-ranking girl in her class.
Shizuko's high intelligence level and affinity for mechanics do not help her in many social situations. In other words, unless she finds someone with the same interests that she has, it is unlikely that she will talk at great length with another person. This is not helped by what seems like a fear of socialization, which was not present when she was a child. The puzzling combination of these two things makes social interaction quite difficult for this sweet young lady. The only one she will talk to at great lengths is her brother, Mamoru, whom she often has a hard time locating since he seems to wander around so much.
If someone does manage to befriend Shizuko, they will find that she is a very kind and generous person. She will do anything to help a friend or, depending on her mood, even a stranger. She is the young lady who will fix a broken toy for a young, crying child or give the shirt off her back to help those in need. Despite her shyness, she is quite kind and can be very friendly, if one can get past her shyness and avoidance of social interaction. A good way to get her to open up would be to bring her some of her favorite kinds of candy, like Sour Patch Kids or Swedish Fish. Of course, this is optional, but she will appreciate small gestures of friendship, rather than large ones. Though she may not have a lot of friends, the ones she has, she keeps very close. She will not betray any of them for anything, partly because she refuses to lie. She knows that telling the truth, even when it is not easy, always yields the best results.
Shizuko is not oblivious to the fact that she is beautiful. When it comes to romance and crushes; however, she is "thick as a brick", meaning that she will have no idea someone likes her until it is explained to her. She might not even know what to do with her own feelings, if she ever developed a crush on someone. She does not know how to handle romance or romantic advances properly. Thus, she prefers to avoid awkward situations by dressing modestly, so that no one gets "the wrong idea".
Despite being of neutral stance in the "war" at the school, Shizuko has a sort of revolutionary spirit within her, that can be likened to Thoreau or the sit-in protesters in the Civil Rights era. She believes that everyone should have equal opportunities to do what they can. She believes that what the governments are doing is wrong, but she understands what they are afraid of. While she does not agree with what the governments of the world are doing in the Ashford project, she refuses to shed blood at the school over what the governments are doing. Her favorite sentence used to describe her stance is as follows: "I believe that we should fight the real enemy, not the person who disagrees with my ideals."

History:
Mrs. Hongo was quite worried when she found out she was pregnant for the second time in 1996. Mr. Hongo was not expecting to have another child; Mamoru had turned out to be such a handful, with his wannabe superhero schemes and his uncanny ability to get himself in trouble. Mr. Hongo had insisted that his wife try her hardest not to become pregnant again, though it seemed there were other plans for the Hongo family. that they did not foresee. Mamoru was excited to find out that he was going to be a big brother, but Mrs. Hongo could tell the little boy was slightly nervous as well, since he knew he was going to have a little sister. He was afraid of hurting her since he was a boy, but his mother reassured him that everything would be okay.
Shizuko Hongo was born on June 21, 1997, nearly a month earlier than she was supposed to be born. She was rushed to the NICU immediately, leaving her mother and brother together in shock. Mamoru was convinced the baby girl would die and begged his mother to do something. Mrs. Hongo quietly chided her son, assuring him that Shizuko would be fine and that the only thing they could do was let the doctors and nurses do their jobs. The Hongo family returned from the hospital a few days later without Shizuko. Mrs. Hongo returned to work after healing and the family continued to function without the fourth member. Mamoru seemed to become more and more distressed about his sister’s condition and started to withdraw into himself.
He opened back up, however, when the Hongos were allowed to bring Shizuko home in late July. The baby girl was adored by her mother, protected by her brother, and watched over silently by her father. The child that Mr. Hongo had originally not wanted became his precious daughter that he tried to spend time with around his hectic work schedule. Despite all of the love she was given, Shizuko was a sickly child. Since she was born premature, she had a weakened immune system and was more susceptible to viral and bacterial infections. The Hongos spent many a time at the hospital, watching as little Shizuko was pumped full of fluids and antibiotics to clear up her pneumonia. By the age of five, she had pneumonia three times and had nearly been killed by measles, since she was too young to receive the vaccine when she acquired the virus.
In response to their daughter’s sickliness, the Hongos considered something taboo and uncommon. They knew the technology was primitive, but they all would have been heartbroken if Shizuko died. So, Mr. and Mrs. Hongo took Shizuko to an office in a building hidden at the edge of Tokyo. Mamoru did not know what was going to happen; he had thought that Shizuko was being taken for some kind of medical procedure and that he could not accompany her because his presence would make her nervous. By the end of the day, Shizuko and her parents were home safe and the little girl was happily tackling her older brother and trying to win the “tickle-war” they had been waging against each other.
Despite her sickness, Shizuko turned out to be a genius child. She was able to learn at an incredibly fast rate compared to her peers, and her teachers were highly impressed. They had all taught Mamoru, who was of average intelligence, and were dumbfounded when little Shizuko could recite her multiplication tables in first grade. She read every book she could get her hands on, even if she was too young to understand what was going on. Of course, she did not understand everything by the end of the book, but she would have a rough idea of the message of the book. She had a tendency to play with Mamoru’s toys and put together some of the models that he seemed to puzzle over. Her strong suits seemed to be be words, logic, and building, which made her parents very proud. They considered passing the weapons company they owned onto Shizuko instead of Mamoru, seeing as she was a genius and genuinely loved to design and build machines. They never had time to make the decision, though, because they had to deal with a more pressing situation.
Mamoru was starting to get in trouble more and more in school, despite his sister’s pleading. Bullies were picking on weaker students, including Shizuko, and he had decided to take a stand. One of the bullies went too far and pushed Shizuko into a wall, which caused a large fight that nearly got Mamoru expelled. Shizuko had hastily explained what happened and insisted she and her brother be left alone. It took some convincing from Mr. and Mrs. Hongo, but the principal allowed the Hongo children to remain in the school. Shizuko suggested that Mamoru talk about his problems with her, though nothing really came of it. She noticed that he seemed to be more and more fascinated with saving people and started a rough sketch of a “suit of armor”. Of course, her art was primitive, as a ninth grader, but she supposed it could have been worse.
The Hongo’s home life started to become dicey when Mamoru started constantly short-circuiting electronic things and set things on fire. This situation was not helped by Shizuko’s creations made out of scrap metal that somehow shot out lazers. The Hongos were concerned about their children, and, just to be safe, they brought home a girl who looked similar to Shizuko and explained the situation to the children. Mamoru and the girl, Samara, were going to go to Ashford Academy for the gifted while Shizuko would go into hiding. Mrs. Hongo felt their decision was selfish, since Mamoru and Shizuko would be separated, but the young woman understood what needed to be done. She told Samara to take the blueprints of the suit with her and to do everything in her power to make sure that Mamoru was okay.
Mr. and Mrs. Hongo were able to keep Shizuko hidden for two years. Sadly, the young woman was caught climbing the fence of a junkyard in the middle of the night. She had been crafting a robotic arm made out of scrap metal and was attempting to slide a light into the palm that would temporarily blind an opponent. She was labelled as suspicious due to the fact that she had no blueprints with her. After two years of avoiding her fate, Shizuko was taken to Ashford to re-unite with her brother. Just before the agents left her, they informed her that Samara, her “twin” of sorts, had been murdered. Despite the fact that she did not know Samara well, Shizuko sore that she would survive for Samara’s sake, since she “owes Samara her life”.
