Basics
Name: Myra Ren Bennett
Nicknames: Firefly
Age: 16
Birthday: June 16th
Grade: 11th
Power:
Octopus mimicry: Mostly mimic octopus, actually. Embedded in her skin are millions of chromatophores, the same chromatophores that allow the mimic octopus to change the color and texture of it’s skin to camouflage itself. Mostly a conscious power, she has to know what’s behind her to use them in any kind of usefulness, having to concentrate on what she wants to look like. Also activated by high emotion, they misfire when she’s in high stress situations, rapidly changing her skin color and texture with no real purpose other than to broadcast her discomfort.
Her skin is also somewhat octopus-like, it being a little more elastic and pressure absorbing than a regular human’s. This allows her to withstand higher pressures, like deeper depths of the ocean. She is able to absorb more pressure from blows, effectively making her a bit harder to actually wound than most.
It is a well known fact that octopus are highly flexible, able to compress themselves in the tiniest of spaces. While Myra can’t exactly do the later, she is hyper flexible. She usually takes advantage of this part of her mimicry by using it to hide in small places instead of actually doing something useful with it.
Venom generation: Blue-ringed octopus have a venom not dissimilar to the tetrodotoxin of pufferfish. Myra, essentially being part octopus, is able to secrete a milder form of this toxin from her skin. While the actual venom that comes from the octopus is incredibly lethal, her form is only such if ingested in large quantities or if it enters the bloodstream through wounds or openings in the skin, also in large quantities.
While the real venom causes complete motor paralysis and respiratory arrest in even moderate quantities, hers only causes minor paralysis -slows the muscles and bodily functions but can be fought through if one is willing- and constricts the bronchial tubes, causing asthma like symptoms but not stopping the breath. The worst it could do is to make one feel like they’re breathing through a straw and not be able to take a full breath.
She can secrete it at will, though she has to focus. It is usually secreted involuntarily, triggered by her fight or flight response, or when her mimicry believes she is hunting -an octopus’s toxin is normally released when subduing prey and her venom generation is tied to her mimicry-.
Danger sense: This is what gave Myra her nickname, but we’ll get into that in later chapters. For now, we will focus on the logistics of it. Unlike other people’s danger senses -if they have the power- which deals with danger to themselves, Myra’s is fundamentally different. Her danger sense only activates when there is danger to another person, not herself. She is only included indirectly when a person or group of people with her is in danger somehow. The sort of danger that triggers it has to be physical -except in certain circumstances. Physical danger includes “direct” danger; something or someone that has the potential to kill or maim.
Her power also works with natural disasters, but only certain times. The disaster has to be completely natural; an earthquake for example, has to 100% be caused by tectonic plates shifting and nothing else, not drilling or anything else. The disaster also has to occur within a mile of herself, and has to measure particularly high on its scale. For instance, hurricanes will only register if it’s a category 3 or above. A tornado, EF4 and above. Man-made disasters, such as oil spills, don’t trigger this power at all.
As for the circumstances mentioned earlier, she can faintly sense when someone is planning to physically hurt another when it might not be outwardly obvious. These times only register as little nigglings compared to the rest. Also the more people that are involved then the greater the feeling, for any circumstances.
And now for the part that gave her her namesake -er, nickname sake. Her sense alerts her by giving her a feeling of dread, nausea, or even dizziness. And glowing. Found in organisms that produce bioluminescence, luciferin is a light-emitting compound that, when it undergoes an enzyme-catalysed oxidation -that enzyme being luciferase-, produces light like that found in fireflies. It is unclear exactly how those enzymes and compounds got into her system, but they are tied to her danger sense. The danger sense activates the oxidation process, the faint, yellow-green glow that she then emits serving as an outward sign that something is going to happen.
However the glow is also tied to her emotions like her chromatophores -think of it as a sort of secondary blush when this happens. She is able to induce catalyzation at will, though this takes concentration and will not produce light nine times out of ten.

Appearance: Myra is a small girl, barely even hitting five foot nothing and might actually be a little shorter though she prefers to say she’s five foot. She’s petite, that’s a given, and isn’t particularly strong though she isn’t frail either. She has short-ish white hair, it ending around her shoulders in mostly straight strands, them curling a little at the ends. She has been known to have a braid on either side as well. Her eyes are a clear, cerulean blue color, much like the ocean she loves though in some lights they look violet.
As for clothes she prefers big, oversized sweaters. As long as it isn't too hot, she will most likely be seen in large hoodies or said sweaters. When she is in her uniform she always wears the blazer, subconsciously thinking of the clothing as a kind of armor almost. The black makes it easier for her to blend in and not stand out. This is the trend with most all her clothes; nothing too flashy.
Personality
Overall Personality: Firefly is a very shy girl. She prefers to be left to her own devices, with books or electronics or animals as stand ins for human friends. Though she is relatively fine with small groups of people - three or less- anything more than that and she starts stuttering, if she talks at all, and trying to make herself as small as possible. Though she isn’t exactly good at making herself invisible. In stressful situations her mimicry goes haywire, often not working or just going crazy, switching between camouflaged and not which just draws more attention to here which exacerbates the problem which stresses her out more...and the cycle just goes on and on. That is why she hates large groups; not only do they freak her out, but if she’s not careful every eye will be on her.
Despite her shyness she is very sweet and kind, though she wishes she wasn’t. She sees brave, stubborn, outgoing people every day and wishes she could be just like them. She wants to be mean, she wants to fight, to yell, to say no and feel no guilt. She sees herself as weak and a pushover and she hates herself for it. She tries to be the person she wants to be but she always ends up failing and turning back into the meek little girl.
Myra is a coward. She doesn’t want to be one, much like most of her personality, but it is just a fact of her life. She’s a scaredy cat. She wants to act tough but the dark still scares her and she jumps at loud noises. If you tell her a ghost story she won’t sleep for a week it’s so bad. She’s tried to force herself to watch horror movies, hoping to cure her fears, but she either chickened out before she actually watched them or she was so scared she was shaking for days.

History

History: She had an unconventional childhood. As the child of two marine biologists, she was picked up and moved a lot as a kid, never really putting down any roots. She spent most of her time growing up in the jungles of South Asia, Indonesia and Malaysia, specifically. Her parents mostly studied octopi, and the species that they were interested in and that called those countries home just so happened to be the one she most mimics. The mimic octopus.
Despite growing up around the hustle and bustle of large cities and the wilderness of rainforests, Myra thinks she had a quiet life. Her parents were more focused on work than on their daughter and Myra barricading herself in her room most of the time. She wanted to explore and see things, but...every time she tried she would run back to her parents in tears because something scared her, only to get pushed aside with a simple “you’ll be fine.” After a time she stopped going to her parents for anything, not even comfort.
Her powers surfaced when she about 10 or 11 years old, thankfully away from her parents eyes. She thought there was something wrong with her, had accidentally killed the dog she grew up with when she started to secrete her toxin unknowingly. She tried to hide it as best she could, retreating back into herself even more as a defense and coping mechanism.
To this day she still does that, trying to hide to protect herself and others. Even at Ashford, a school filled with only mutant teenagers, she still feels like an outcast or a misfit. She feels most at home in the water, swimming among all the sea life and able to think clearly.
