Yeux du Roi - "Eyes of the King"
This is the title which Laurent himself has given his powers, for two major reasons. The first is that both of his powers are eye-based, and thus have triggers which can be seen in his eyes, and one of the two of which is entirely visual by nature. The other is because the abilities granted him by these powers could be compared to the powers that a king commands: the first being the power to keep watch over his kingdom, and the second to wage war, or repel his enemies. He has two sets of powers, each of which is attributed to one of his eyes, and each of which has its own unique visual trigger.
Left Eye - "Eye of the Watcher"
This eye is the one which includes his visual abilities, and is nicknamed the "eye of the watcher" because it represents a king's power to watch over his kingdom. The two powers assigned to this eye are sight lock, and oculo-somatic separation. Whenever a power this eye controls is activated, the pupil of his left eye glows a brighter-than-normal purple, with a ring of black outside his iris, almost making his eye look like a bullseye. An interesting side effect of either of his visual powers if used for too long is that beyond physical fatigue, they will eventually begin to cause pain in his eyes, and if pushed to their limit, can leave him temporarily blind once disengaged.
Sight Lock - This is the first of his two visual powers. Essentially what it allows him to do is keep a near perfect watch on a target of his choice, preventing them from evading or escaping his sight. As a prerequisite for this ability to be used, Laurent must maintain full visual contact with a target. Once this has been done, the target is "tagged." Laurent can only tag one target at a time, so if he wishes to change the person this power will effect, he must focus on *that* target for another thirty seconds. When sight lock is activated, Laurent can see a purple light glowing around the outside of their body. So long as he keeps the power active, he can keep perfect track of their location anywhere within a 10 meter radius of him, even if he does not have line of sight. In addition, even should his target use an ability or power which would hide them, make them invisible, or distract him from seeing them, his power allows him to keep track of them via the purple outline visible to him around them. This ability constantly drains his physical energy, increasing the longer he uses it, forcing him to switch it on and off as needed rather than being able to keep it on at all times. In addition, once a target leaves the 10 meter radius around him, he will lose track of them until they reenter said radius. He also can not sense the direction or location of an attack which is not them physically attacking him, and thus can not use this power to preternaturally evade attacks at range. Finally, this ability does not automatically grant him the ability to dodge or counter attacks which are beyond his ability. In other words, if a person is moving faster than the eye can see, while he may still be able to keep track of them, he would NOT suddenly be fast enough to counter or evade them effectively.
Oculo-somatic Separation - This is a unique ability which further allows Laurent to keep watch on his surroundings. From the get-go it should be noted that this power *can not* at present be used in combination with sight lock, as the strain is simply too much for both his eye and his physical energy. In using this power, Laurent actually induces upon himself what could be compared to an out of body experience. He is able to actually separate his sense of sight from his physical body. The default view with this power is viewing himself as if from above. With this ability active, he can actually explore an area of a 15 meter radius around his person as if he himself were walking about, without having to actually move his body.
It should be noted that by and large, this is a recon ability and not a combat one. Firstly, while using this ability, Laurent is largely unable to use his body. The shock of separating his sense of sight from his physical body causes paralysis to his skeletomuscular system, stopping him from performing any fine motor action while using oculo-somatic separation. This leaves him open to attack, as he is unable to defend himself or evade. In addition recalling his sense of sight to his body, thereby stopping the use of his power and returning his ability to move, takes time, dependent upon how far he had stretched it beforehand. If he was exploring an area the full 15 meters away from his body, it would take some time. In addition, similar to sight lock, the longer this power is used, the more strain it puts on his body proportionally. This strain will affect him fully upon his sight's return to his body, which gives this power all the more potential to seriously endanger him.
Right Eye - Eye of the Warden
This is the eye which encompasses his offensive power, and is nicknamed the "eye of the warden" because it represents a king's ability to repel his enemies. It includes a power referred to as impulse manipulation. Just like his left eye abilities, use of the power attributed to his right eye triggers a visible change in the appearance of his right eye. While using impulse manipulation, Laurent's right eye's iris changes to a bright, forget-me-not blue, with several veins over his eyebrow pressing against the skin like the arches of a king's crown. Also just like his left eye abilities, if used for too long, beyond causing physical fatigue, his right eye powers will also eventually begin to cause pain in his eyes, and if pushed to its limit, can leave him temporarily blind once disengaged.
Impulse Manipulation - In terms of physics, an impulse is the initial force required to start an object moving in a given direction. Essentially, it is the kick start for motion and momentum. Laurent has the ability to create this initial burst of kinetic energy in very small bursts, which allows him to accelerate an object from a standstill to the speed of his choice at will. There are of course, limits to how this can be done and to what extend, but that is the general idea behind this power. He is able to accelerate standstill items into projectiles, even pushing the air at high speeds to use as wind manipulation-like attacks, and can make his own physical force more deadly by accelerating the object or person struck by his blows. In addition, he can also accelerate his own body by simple motions such as kicking off the ground, allowing himself to move rapidly and even perform such feats as air-dashing.
First and foremost, Laurent must be physically touching the object that he is accelerating. He can do so from a distance or remotely, which means that when it comes to using his power in close combat, he must land a hit for his power to be able to work. To make up for this, he *can* touch multiple points, "marking each one," then activate his power to create an impulse at each "marked" point, increasing the force generated. Secondly, he can not decide the direction in which the accelerated object will travel. Essentially, whichever direction the first touch landed on the object as moving, that is the direction the object will travel once he creates the impulse. This requires him to be extremely precise in the application of his power, which can be very difficult in a combat situation. Finally, the energy expended when using this power is proportional based on two factors. The first is the speed at which the object in question is being moved, and the second is the mass of the object being moved. Basically, the larger the object, the more energy it requires to move in the first place, and then even more is required to move it quickly. In general, it can be assumed that half the physical energy needed to actually move the object by hand is what is taken from Laurent in order to use his power on the object. So, moving small objects like small to medium sized rocks, sticks, water and the like, or weightless things like air, is easy and requires little energy. However moving anything person-sized or larger, will begin to take a toll on Laurent. He can only move something that big a maximum of ten consecutive times before he risks both temporary blindness and forced deactivation of his powers, even unconsciousness. Huge objects like a tree or a car he could summon up the energy to move once, but even that would cause serious strain on him.
