Basics
Name: Scott HutchinsonNicknames: Shorty, Lucky Bastard, Impulsive IdiotAge: 15Birthday: 20th JuneGrade: 9thPowers:
Mathematical Intuition- Scott has a natural understanding of mathematics and the concepts behind the subject, allowing him to learn and apply advanced mathematical theories with little to no effort. Essentially a human calculator, Scott's mind processes at a speed far beyond what the normal human brain should be capable of, meaning that he can solve equations and related problems with supernatural speed and precision. While his rapid processing offers some advantages, his real power lies in the fact that he has a complete understanding of why math works. Rather than simply knowing how to plug numbers into a given formula, Scott understands the theories behind the formulas and can build off of them and exploit them in ways that only a true genius could. However, Scott’s racing thoughts oftentimes overwhelm him, especially at times when his emotional state is less than stable. When in crisis, Scott’s mental processing becomes so fast that it inhibits his ability to act, essentially shutting him down until he is able to calm himself enough to regain control over his thoughts. Most of the time, however, his rapid processing simply causes him to be impulsive and easily distracted, almost as if he has ADHD. When Scott does manage to focus his thoughts, he is capable of thinking on an incredibly high level, but it takes a great deal of concentration and his natural tendency to experience strong emotions oftentimes sabotages his ability to think clearly. Lastly, his racing thoughts tend to make falling asleep a major challenge. He doesn't seem to have the ability to turn off his mind, making it difficult for him to relax enough to fall asleep. Of course, chronic sleep deprivation only causes him to become more irritable and less emotionally controlled, perpetuating a cycle of self-destructive habits that hinder his ability to function in day-to-day life.
Tychokinesis (better known as probability manipulation)- Scott’s intuitive understanding of the mathematical forces acting on the world come with the ability to very slightly alter those forces based on the stochastic or “random” field. Based on the laws of probability, Scott can cause certain things to become slightly more or less likely to happen. For example, let’s say we’re going to have a game of heads or tails. We are tossing a fair coin with a 50% chance of landing on either heads or tails. Scott bets that it will land on heads and you bet it will land on tails. Scott, being the cheating bastard he is, can use his power to increase the likelihood of the toss coming out in his favour by 1-5%. So, if he wanted to, he could increase the likelihood of the coin landing on heads from 50% to 55%, consequently lowering the chances of it landing on tails to 45% (note: he cannot influence anything with a 0% chance of occurring as that would imply that the event is impossible. Similarly, anything with a 100% chance of occurring is likely already happening and is therefore beyond his ability to control). Although Scott’s powers only allow him to alter the stochastic field by a very small margin, it ultimately causes him to “get lucky” more often than the average person should. Going back to the coin-toss example, even with only a 55% chance of landing on heads, Scott has made it so that the coin is more likely to land on heads than tails, meaning that he has a better chance of winning more tosses than you. However, it does not mean he will win absolutely. We do not live in a deterministic system and random forces are constantly at work, allowing for a great deal of variation between outcomes. It is also important to note that he can use his power at will, but the more he alters the natural flow of the stochastic field, the more exhausting it becomes.Member Group: NeutralCanon or not: NotAppearance: Scott is 5'2" and 112 pounds, but what he lacks in size he makes up for in attitude. He has pale blonde hair, cut short, that swoops down just above his eyes. Freckles visibly speckle his face and body, but his skin remains stubbornly pale no matter how much time he spends in the sun. Scott has clear blue eyes, though you wouldn't know it since he almost always wears sunglasses, even indoors. Beneath his eyes lie subtle dark circles, and his slightly off-centre nose betrays the fact that it has been broken more than once. He has a crooked smile with dimples and a tendency to fidget, especially with his hands or feet. There's no denying it; the kid's got mad style. When not in uniform, Scott wears a long sleeved white shirt with red sleeves and black skinny jeans (though somehow they're still baggy on him). In the winter he can be seen sporting an equally baggy red hoodie. He doesn't care much for the uniform and never ties his tie. As for footwear, Scott has been wearing his "lucky" red converse ever since he won them off one of his classmates a few years ago. Although apparently held together only by the grace of God and liberal amounts of duct tape, he refuses to trade them in for a new pair.
Personality
Overall Personality: Scott was born angry. Angry at his family, angry at life, angry at his own god-damned anger, he is prone to aggressive outbursts at the worst of times. Although he tries to suppress his pugnacious impulses, Scott seems to have little control over his actions and rarely thinks them through, oftentimes causing him to pick fights with the wrong people and antagonising the few who try to reach out to him. His racing thoughts are a constant source of annoyance and frustration for him. They prevent him from being able to make rational decisions based on solid logic, forcing him to act almost exclusively on impulse. He realises that his impulses are self-destructive but feels powerless to control them which only serves to aggravate him further. People are oftentimes put-off by Scott's behaviour and either avoid him or try to put him in his place, but he never seems to learn his lesson.
A product of his up-bringing, Scott lacks many of the social skills that the average person takes for granted. He is arrogant and has a tendency to misread situations as threatening even when they're not. He is easily incited to anger and burns out quickly, all flare and no fight, but to give the kid credit where credit is due: he's nothing if not persistent. On the rare occasion that he takes a liking to someone, he's liable to stick very closely by that person whether they like it or not. There is a certain attitude that he admires about people who he perceives as being especially cool. Impassive rationality is an attractive concept to Scott who wants nothing more than to cool his own head and act with a sense of controlled purpose. Although he tries to model himself after such individuals, his hurricane mind prevents him from being very good at it. The dichotomy between who he is and who he wants to be is yet another chronic source of discontent on the long list of discontents that rule Scott's life.
When not flipping out over some minor irritant, Scott enjoys listening to music and playing video games. He likes things that engage his senses and move at his speed which makes rapid-fire rap music and fast-paced games very appealing to him. School was a miserable struggle for Scott and he gave up on it long ago, preferring to dedicate his time to his hobbies instead. The importance of education was never stressed to him and the traditional school setting will never be an environment in which he excels. However, even with his lack of education and social skills, Scott isn't completely stupid; his profound understanding of mathematics allows him to be a wicked problem solver. Solving puzzles, figuring out patterns, determining the most probable course of action-- Scott's quick mind makes him almost prophetic when it comes to predicting outcomes, and if he could just keep his impulses under control, he could be a force to be reckoned with.Likes:

Behind the CharacterFamily Members/guardians:
Grandmother: Nana
Mother: Cindy Hutchinson
Father: Who caresHistory: Life has not been terribly kind to Scott. The product of a teenage romance gone too far, he was born and cradled in the unpredictable inner-city slums of Miami, Florida. Money was always a concern and his mother worked a variety jobs, that is, when she wasn't too busy relapsing to her opiate addiction. In the meantime, Scott was largely left in the care of his Nana, a rough around the edges chain-smoker with a remarkable talent for swearing (she could be a poet with a creative vocabulary like that). Nana suffered from debilitating arthritis and was oftentimes cranky, possessing far too little energy and patience to keep up with her hyperactive grandson. Though she loved him and her daughter, she was the kind of person to the buy into the philosophy of tough love and displays of affection were virtually non-existent in the Hutchinson household. It never bothered Scott, though; he'd never known anything different. Scott's father was nothing more than the name on the child-support cheques that arrived inconsistently month by month, and then eventually, not at all. Shortly after the cheques stopped coming, his small family was evicted from their apartment and forced into a homeless shelter for a few terrifying weeks before finding a place to stay in the projects, the sole white family in a predominantly Hispanic neighbourhood. Being different quickly became a central theme within Scott's life.
School turned out to be disastrous for Scott, though no one was really surprised. Not only was he white, but he was smart in a way that exceeded everyone's expectations. He picked up on mathematics with an almost supernatural ease, though he quickly learned to hide it, playing dumb and doing his best not to make himself any more of a target than he already was. But even so, his classmates were always able to find something to harass him about, punishing him day after day in the way that kids often do when confronted with something foreign. Scott can't really blame them for it, though. When you grow up in an area where you feel absolutely powerless you take it out on whatever (or whoever) you can, and Scott became the unfortunate sacrificial lamb, wallowing friendlessly on the bottom tier of the social food chain. It was just one of those things best understood by those who lived it, and trying to explain the daily ritual to an outsider would be like trying to explain a cult or a religious experience.
Though Scott sympathises with his abusers, he can't forgive them. As it turns out, forgiveness makes a rather poor anesthetic. Despite the best efforts of his teachers and counselors, Scott never learned how to cope well with his anger and it became a black hole consuming him day in and day out. Inexpressible frustration and disappointment were ever-present sparks fueling his fire, preventing him from letting go of his rage while the world around him preached again and again the gospel of violence. Drug raids, domestic disputes, people shot dead in the streets-- by the time he reached adolescence, Scott had seen it all. But, around the same time, his luck finally started to change.
Scott doesn't remember exactly when or how he got involved in gambling, but once he did he never looked back. Black jack, poker, dice, he played it all and, much to the frustration of his opponents, he was good at it. For whatever reason, the kid had won fortune's favour and seemed to get lucky more often than anyone ever should. Accused of cheating on more than one occasion, numerous investigations were made as to why the kid always seemed to get so lucky, but no one could ever pin anything on him. He became a sort of back-alley hero as he played the circuit, earning the quiet admiration of his peers. Soon enough, the kids who once bullied him mercilessly could be found cheering him on after school as kids challenged him one after the other to games of chance.
Having finally earned some respect among his his peers, Scott reveled in his new-found popularity and began to get cocky. He was good at what he did and he knew it, and soon everyone else did too. What Scott didn't know was that he had also attracted the attention of Ashford's agents. A pair of agents set up a sting operation, luring him into a game of black jack on the pretense of being a couple of con-men. Scott, in his arrogance, took them on thinking only of how cool it would be to out-con a pair of scammers by reversing their luck. He was screwed the moment he picked up his cards.
It was early evening and he was walking home alone after hanging out after school. He spied the two shady looking characters loitering outside of an abandoned factory building with a folding table set up and a deck of cards resting on it. No one else was around. Scott planned on ignoring the two, having lived on the rough side of town long enough to know better than to stop for strangers, but when they called out to him offering him a game of black jack he simply couldn't resist. He was quickly absorbed in the game, winning just as many hands as he lost, the pair of con-men keeping Scott on his toes as he tried to manipulate his luck behind the scenes. He delighted in the challenge and before he knew it night had fallen and the streets were empty save for the three of them. Needless to say, that was when his luck ran out.
Scott woke up a few days later at Ashford and was given the whole song and dance routine. He had difficulty coming to terms with the fact that he'd just been picked off the streets and sent to a boarding school of all places, but after the initial shock wore off (and he stopped trying to pick fights with the staff) he was allowed out to participate in school life. Scott has no idea what to expect from his fellow students. The whole situation still feels unreal, but Scott is coping with it as best he can, and maybe if he's lucky the school will turn out to be a positive influence on his life. Or maybe everyone will just come to realise that you can take the kid out of the hood, but you can't take the hood out of the kid, yo.
