Basics
Name: Evan
Nicknames: Red
Age: 17
Birthday: July 14, 1998
Grade: 11
Power:
Darkness Manipulation:
Evan has the ability to manipulate shadows and areas of darkness, in the most broad terms. He usually does this by using his hands to bring the shadows over to him and shaping them into what he wants them to be. He can manipulate his own shadow, as well as the shadows of other people and surrounding objects to fight. To do this, he usually keeps an eye on the shadow he wants to use for thirty seconds and controls it with sharp movements of his hand. Using this form of attack, he can have the shadow restrain or even attack a person, in the form of inky black fists or feet. The restraint version of his manipulation usually involves chain-shaped tendrils that wrap around a person’s ankles and wrists. He can also create his own darkness, in the form of small blobs by displacing light, but these do not last for very long and drain his energy rather quickly.
Evan does not have total control over his power, yet, however. The maximum distance that he can manipulate shadows from is about fifteen feet away from himself in all directions. Any shadow beyond that is useless and out of his reach. If he gets distracted by something, the shadows have the potential to “go off and do their own thing”, meaning that they could potentially attack someone without him actually willing them to. He has a very hard time using the shadows of people in combat because they move and he needs to look at the shadows that he wants to utilize for at least thirty seconds before actually using them. Because of this, he prefers to use shadows of trees, buildings, and other inanimate objects to fight with.
Umbrakinetic Blade Construction:
Evan’s ability to make blade-shaped constructs stems from his ability to manipulate darkness in general. Usually, he will take a part of his own shadow and take it between his hands, pulling outward to both sides to form the blade. The shape the blade takes is usually what he envisions in his mind’s eye. For example, if he wants to create a sword, he thinks about what a sword would look like and the darkness would form into a likeness of the sword he had in mind. The only difference between the picture in his head and the actual construct itself is that the construct will stay an inky black color. Any blade construct that he creates is for his use only and, if someone else tries to use it, the construct will attack that person, as if it has a mind of its own.
Evan takes a risk when using this power. As stated before, he has to thin the shadow he wants to use between his hands and think of the bladed object that he wants it to become. Creating any kind of bladed object between his hands obviously creates a risk for injury, hence why he has only perfected the art of making swords and not daggers and throwing knives, though he plans to work on those things so as not to cause himself any more injury. It should also be noted that the swords or blades that he creates do not have any abilities beyond slicing and possibly blocking, depending on how thick and heavy the sword is. For example, if the sword he pictures happens to be a magical one, the sword he creates will not be magical by any means. It will merely have the sword’s appearance, and nothing more than that.
Shadow Stealth:
Evan can cloak himself in his own shadow. He then hides in the shadows of non-moving objects or even people to listen in on conversations or to use the element of surprise on an opponent. He is usually not noticed if he can stay quiet long enough and keep his breathing from being too loud. Obviously, if he would shift out of the area of the shadow that he is hiding in, his own “shadow cloak” would disappear and he would be visible. He could also be noticed by any other darkness manipulators, people who have really good eyesight, or if he sneezed, laughed or talked while he was hiding. While he is hiding, he cannot manipulate the shadow he is hiding in, because it will give away his position.

Appearance:
Evan stands just around five feet, seven inches, though, his attitude could suggest otherwise. His skin tone is a mix of both fair and a slight olive tone, which means that he does not burn easily, but he does get tan very quickly. He maintains proper martial arts form, due to his extensive training, which includes good posture and alertness at all times. Others around him had always puzzled over his dark crimson eyes, considering he had no other albinistic traits that were displayed in his features. He does not seem to mind, though, since he sees them as just another unique feature of his. His hair color, depending on the light, can either be a strict orange to a more brown-orange mix, more commonly referred to as “burnt orange”. As with his eyes, people that had encountered him in the past were often confused by the oddity, but Evan himself does not seem to mind. He keeps his hair short and well-trimmed to facilitate clear vision and display his facial features. There seems to be an ever-present smirk on the young man’s face, which can sometimes get him into sticky situations. He is very confident in himself and his abilities, which is displayed not only by his attitude, but by how he carries himself, which can also get him into trouble at times.
Evan does not seem to mind wearing the school uniform very much, since he claims that “women like a man in a uniform”. The only time he really complains about wearing it is in the summer, since he can overheat easily. When not dressed in school garb, Evan dresses in a casual style, usually consisting of jeans and a button down shirt. He will sometimes wear t-shirts as well, but he does not have as many of those, simply because most of the clothes he has are hand-me-downs from other people’s children. Thankfully, he knows how to wear said hand-me-downs in such a way that he deems ‘stylish’ and can easily pull off the confidence to wear any outfit. Well, except maybe a dress or skirt.
Personality
Overall Personality:
Cocky, quick-witted, flirtatious, optimistic, lonely. All of these words describe Evan in one way or another. Much like any person, he has certain sides of himself that he shows to some people and not others. Why he does this, he is not really sure. Regardless, he tries to be true to himself, even if he is not always the “ideal person”.
On the surface, Evan is confident, even to the point of being cocky. He is very proud of who he is and his abilities. He has a tendency to overestimate himself, though, and will believe that he can take any opponent in a fight. His confidence allows him to flirt with young women shamelessly. Other girls have described him as a “charmer”, and he has a tendency to flirt with any girl, no matter if she is taken or single. After all, he cannot tell simply by looking that a girl is dating someone, unless she is actually with her boyfriend. This is a good deterrent in most cases, though he will make a comment that might have him hurting by the end of the day. Even after being shot down or beaten up, he still holds himself in a confident way, even if he does complain about his situation. Just because he is confident and occasionally cocky does not mean that he is arrogant by any means. He will admit that there are people that are better than himself in the world and will not hesitate to do so, even if it does wound his pride a little.
It may become very apparent very quickly that Evan is certainly not the brightest bulb in the metaphorical box. This does not make him stupid, however. Despite his lack of what some would call “book smarts”, he has a large amount of common sense. He is also very creative and can think on his feet, which allows him to sweet-talk his way out of bad situations. He does not bother using sophisticated vocabulary or words because he knows that some people will not be able to understand him or that doing so would be a waste of time. Despite his extroverted nature and tendency to talk at long lengths, Evan is, at his core, a straight to the point kind of person. He wants to get the important messages out of the way so that there is plenty of time to chat about non-important things. Often, this is to delay his return to “boring” school work that he finds to be distasteful, and a good friend would try and discourage this habit so it does not continue. His frustration with constant schoolwork is also coupled with the fact that he has a short attention span and has a tendency to bounce from one subject to the next without any warning.
It is very hard to make Evan feel genuinely upset or “get him down”, so to speak. He always looks on the brighter side of life, even when things seem gloomy and dark. He likes to think of his optimism as being the light to help someone along the way. When someone gets to know Evan, they will realize that, beyond the superficial, proud flirt, there is a kind-hearted friend who wants to help people the best he can. He knows he is not very smart and that he is not the wisest person around, but he still believes he can offer a shoulder to cry on and an ear to lend when things are annoying or distressing. He will often give advice, if he has some for the appropriate situation, but just be careful when using it, for he is quite a blunt person and it shows in the suggestions he gives.
Evan enjoys “having fun” and joking around. Usually, he will practice in the gym if he is bored, but that does not last very long. He likes pulling pranks on unsuspecting people, though he will apologize if someone was injured. He tries to choose harmless pranks that will not hurt anyone, but that can be outweighed by how much enjoyment he receives out of other peoples’ reaction. His favorite way to have fun, though, is to just be around and talk with other people. He is an extrovert by nature, so he enjoys the company of others and thrives in their presence.
Evan does have some character flaws though, a major one being his temper. It is very easy to anger Evan, especially if he feels that his pride is wounded or that he is being made fun of. His retaliation is often swift and more physical in nature, unless a woman is on the receiving end. If this is the case, he will often just respond in a loud voice and simply storm away. It is against his principles to lay a hand on a female in any show of violence. This does not exclude males, however, so he will often start throwing punches if he happens to be angry at a guy. After a certain point, though, he will exhaust his energy and either walk away or just forgive the person. He believes that grudges are stupid and more of a “girl thing”, even though this is not always the case.
Another major flaw of his is his stunning laziness. For someone who studied martial arts extensively throughout his childhood, he does not really do much. He has a carefee attitude toward life and just lets things go wherever they plan to go. He figures that there is no point in trying to change the “flow” of things. Of course, if one of his friends was in danger, he would no doubt jump into action, but he does not worry about things that he thinks are insignificant. He prefers to be a passenger on the ship of life; just enjoying his time and letting the crew of the ship worry about the possible storms and sharks.
Evan is very talented at projecting an image of a popular, confident, playboy. What he prefers not to show, though, is the side of himself that very few, if any people see. Even deeper down, he has troubles, just like every other teenager. He grew up without any siblings, and in his childhood, not many kids wanted to play with him because he was “weird”. Even though he can make friends very easily, Evan often feels alone when he is in a room of people he does not know. Being by himself “drives him crazy”, and he much prefers the company of other people so that he does not get lost in the thoughts of his wandering mind. He feels guilty when others seem to dislike him for his bluntness and occasional crudeness, even if he prefers not to show it. He feels that, like most young men, he has to conceal his emotions in order to be taken seriously.

History
Family Members/guardians:
He is not acquainted with his biological family, but he has a mother, father, and a twin sister. He was raised by a man he only referred to as “Sensei”.
History:
Evan does not know very much about his beginnings. He did not know his parents, since he was dropped off on a young karate instructor’s doorstep. He does know that he was born on July 14, 1998. He also knows that he is somehow related to the man whom he simply called “Sensei”. Regardless of who his real parents are, though, Evan considers Sensei his father figure, even to this day.
Evan was dropped off on Sensei’s doorstep after a few weeks of life. His mother and father were not ready to have two children at one time, and they both agreed that the young twin would have to be the one to go. So, his mother left him on the doorstep of a distant cousin, wrapped in blankets and resting soundly in a car seat. Thankfully, the man who lived in the house had checked the doorstep before going to bed. He was stunned to find a child outside his door, but he seemed to be a little more relaxed when he found a note in the infant’s onesie explaining the situation. The instructor knew nothing about child care, so, after a few days, he went out to buy some books to learn as much as he could. Between teaching classes and struggling to buy infant formula, the new father managed to read the books.
As Evan grew older, he became more and more troublesome. The height of his misbehavior before being trained in martial arts was in his preschool years. Sensei could no longer take the constant calls interrupting his classes and the little boy throwing tantrums. So, at the age of five, Evan was tossed into a class of children around his age who were starting martial arts. The the little boy thought he knew much better than the other kids and assumed that he would win, since he was able to mimic Sensei’s movements that he practiced in his spare time. That was the first time he was humbled in his life, and it certainly would not be the last. As time went on, he became much better at martial arts, but he became increasingly disinterested in schoolwork. Of course, the boy was not very gifted when it came to school, but he made up for it by being a very social person, even if the other students decided he was “weird” and avoided him. Despite this, he never stopped trying to make friends, even if he felt all alone deep down.
Evan and Sensei lived in a warm part of the country until the redhead reached the age of 10. When Evan came home one day, he found most of essential household items piled in the car and some of his belongings in boxes on the steps. He tried to stop Sensei several times, demanding to know what was going on. Not even minutes later, he found himself sorting through items to be either kept, thrown away, or donated. The only explanation he received for the sudden move was that he “needed to become stronger”, even though he had no idea what that meant. All the boy knew was that he was upset that he did not get to say goodbye to anyone he knew, even though he knew deep down they would hardly notice his absence. After several hours of sorting, packing, and trying not to cry, Evan and Sensei set off to the north, where cold mountains kissed the horizon and where the sun never seemed to touch, no matter how low it was.
Evan hated every moment of living in the mountains. It was too cold and he was thin, so he really did not have a way to keep himself warm other than a jacket, which was a hand-me-down. It snowed constantly and sun never seemed to shine, even on good days. The mountain children were not interested in making friends; all they wanted to do was hunt and play in the snow. Sensei seemed perfectly content in the frigid weather, despite the fact that he was only providing Evan with lessons and was not teaching any classes. From the age of 10 until the age of 13, Evan lived in the frigid tundra, trying to cope with his feelings of loneliness and isolation, and, in the later years, the changing state of his body and mind. Sensei was able to help him cope with the transition to adulthood, but nothing could have prepared either of the them for what was about to happen.
A little after Evan’s thirteenth birthday, he and Sensei moved back to the warm part of country, much to the young teen’s relief. Things started to change quickly after that, though. One day, while he was training in the gym, a shadow of one of the swords on the wall flew toward him. He panicked and held up his arms, wondering if the gym had been cursed while they were gone or something. Instead of being sliced by the shadow, though, he opened his eyes to find the black “object” suspended in the air in front of him. Curiously, he shifted his hand to the right, and the shadow followed. He did the same with his left hand before reaching out to grab it, only to have the shadow dart back toward the sword. He returned to the gym the following day, testing out his strange power over shadows. He found later that he could shape sharp objects with the shadows as well, though he also found that they hurt like real swords slicing through his flesh. For a while, he thought he was hallucinating, or maybe even dreaming, but, whenever he tried to pinch himself, he found that he was awake. He was one hundred percent sure that these abilities were not normal, so he tried to find out as much as he could about what was happening to him.
“Gifted”. This was the only word that Evan could find to describe the darkness gravitating toward him, the bladed objects constructed from shadows, and his later developed ability to blend in with the shadows of people and objects around him. Nevertheless, he tried to make the best of it and ended up being very popular at his school. All of the kids seemed to like him, though maybe it was due to the fact that he could “beat people up” like a champ by sneaking around and using a surprise attack. He was involved in a few after school fights, but he was able to worm his way out of punishment by using a “sweet-talk” method he learned by watching old high school movies and by reading articles on the Internet. Sensei was never happy about these fights, and Evan always paid for them later in training. Despite all of this, Evan was happy and finally felt like he was part of the world in some way.
Not long after his fourteenth birthday, Evan heard a knock on the front door. He thought it was one of his friends, hoping to kick around a soccer ball or shoot some hoops. He was surprised to find a man with sunglasses that only covered part of a scar over his eye and a dark suit standing on front of the door instead of his friend. He was about to ask what was going on when he was grabbed by the arm and dragged outside. He was aiming a kick behind the man’s knees, but he felt fingers on his pressure point and the world went black for some time. When he awoke, he was strapped into a dark car with tinted windows. He tried to wriggle his hands free and bang on the windows, but somehow, his hands were tied up in the seat belt. The person sitting next to him in the back seat tried to appeal to him with candy, but he simply ignored the well-dressed young lady and stared out the window, as if to indicate he would be uncooperative. He wondered if Sensei was going to come and find him, even though he was almost sure that he was not. After all, Evan was not Sensei’s child, so it really would not matter what happened to him.
After driving for what seemed like hours, Evan was dragged into a large, unfamiliar building. He could almost feel the sketchiness and evil emanating from the decrepit laboratory. The first sound he heard was a girl’s scream of agony and he listened for the direction it was coming from. He tried to dash off to find the sound, but there was someone waiting at the end of the hall who sent him backwards with an invisible gust. After this, he was taken to a space in the lab where he was allowed to practice with his powers, against other teens his own age and even some younger children. He refused to fight with anyone younger than himself, merely out of principle. They also allowed him to continue practicing martial arts with other people who had martial arts intuition or other abilities.
Even though he was able to do some things, being in that place made Evan very unhappy. He could hear screams coming from other rooms, and he hardly slept at night. He tried to make sure that he talked to every person he could meet at mealtime so that he could ease his conscience. He also tried to get information out of the people who had been there longer than he had. He found out that the building had originally been used for disease research, but someone had bought it and turned it into an underground fighting ring for gifted kids. He also found out most kids did not stay at there for more than a year or two. The first option was being shipped off to a school for the “gifted” called Ashford Academy, if they were deemed ‘competent’ and ‘worthy’. He was too afraid to ask what would happen to those who were not deemed so. He almost knew what the answer would be based on the looks on their faces when he dared to ask the question.
Evan spent two years and several months fighting other teens, hearing screams of those that were tortured, and trying to survive with his sanity intact. Right before he turned seventeen, he was enrolled in Ashford, though he was not brought to the school until the middle of the summer term, due to a communication breakdown between the fighting ring’s “contact” and the school.
